Hi! I’m José Manuel. I’m an engineer turned into Ph.D. turned into Data Scientist. During the five years my Ph.D. has taken, I’ve solved industrial and scientific problems using applied Machine Learning and I’ve usually done so using the R programming language. You can check my published research papers by clicking on my Google Scholar button, below my profile picture. And if you’d like to see a two page resume of me, you can find it here.
I also ramble sometimes about Data Science and give talks from time to time. If you are interested in that instead, you should go a bit down, to the posts (coming soon!) and recent talks sections.

Technical
My main expertise lies on a pure Data Science profile: I am an expert in getting messy data from different sources and aggregating, cleaning, exploring and modeling them to solve problems. I do so applying Statistics, Machine Learning, Visualization and Data Engineering concepts.
The main tool I use to do so is R: I’m an expert on it, my main toolbox includes the tidyverse
, caret
, knitr
and shiny
packages (this whole website was done using the blogdown
package too!) and I’ve used it and taught it for five years now. With it, I can perform the full lifecycle of a Data Science project, from getting the data to deploying a custom dashboard or HTML report to present my results. If needed, though, I can also use Python, Matlab or Excel. I’ve also worked with databases, both relational and non relational and dabbed into a bit of Javascript with D3.js to create custom visualizations.
Personal
I’ve taught Data Science, Machine Learning and R
for more than 3 years now. If you’re interested in organizing a course or a series of talks, contact me and we’ll surely be able to arrange something.
